here in new jersey, that they have asked president obama for emergency fuel. >> katy tur in north jersey tonight, thank you, can you tell things are getting a little dicey in the most densely populated area in the united states? sensing that, the feds are talking about a military response to the storm, when we talk about the military response, heavy lift aircraft at the air force base, loading up with trucks from california to come to new york to get the lights back on. in new jersey, governor christie is going to house visiting crews from other states at an old military base, and three u.s. navy war ships are going to sit off the coast of new york and new jersey, feeding the overall effort. again, across a huge area, this storm's impact is staggering. across such a wide area, a cold, dark night, food going bad, people can't buy gas, kids can't go to school, they can't go to work and many homes are ripped open. many businesses are still without power across 15 states, millions of people, from maine to michigan, all the way down to north carolina. let's not forget. cities and towns

after a packed day, romney in colorado and obama in virginia trying to turn out their supporters and close the sale. back here in new york, meantime, areas near here in staten island, queens, long island, and new jersey still dealing with the devastating effects of hurricane sandy. nearly a week later, long gas lines, electricity still out for two million, and of course falling temperatures now. we've got it all covered this morning. to start things off, we have our final nbc news/"wall street journal" predetection poll numbers. let's go right to our political director chuck todd in his command center with the latest snapshot. >> good morning, david. let me show you the numbers. 48 for the president, 47 for mitt romney. slight gender gap advantage for the president. he leads by eight among women. mitt romney leads by seven among men. what's interesting about the figure is it is the exact final number from the poll from 2004 with bush when he was at 48% and john kerry was at 47%. one of the reasons for the slight uptick for the president, remember we had them at 47-47 two weeks ago. l

eight days away, president obama began his day in florida but with the weather deteriorating in washington, d.c., he rushed back to the white house. he cancelled his appearance in orlando and has just now cancelled an event for tomorrow scheduled for green bay, wisconsin and governor romney has also cancelled some of his events. we'll have more on the impact on the presidential race. >> we have correspondents stationed all up and down the east coast. let's start with al roker. >> reporter: if you look back at this beech there's usually on a beautiful sunny day from these dunes out to the water's edge about 150 feet as you can see. that is gone. and it is enencroacroaching on dunes. sandy is threatening these dunes and the winds are picking up. sandy has 85 mile-per-hour winds. it is moving north-northwest at 20 miles per hour. so it's picked up forward speed. and at this at any rate it will be reaching the new jersey shore line sometime within the early evening hours to mid to late evening hours here along the shore line. once that happens as you can see on the path all bets off
